Some students do not try because they do not believe they have the skills to perform the task. Believing that they can perform a task is a necessary component to be motivated to try. There are other factors that play into motivation as well. Besides believing they have the skills to perform the task (self-efficacy), students must also believe the task is important and that the environment will support their effort.
